About GiEM
GiEM is a coalition of civil society organizations, community groups, government agencies, academia, and individuals working together to advance gender equity in education and dismantle systemic barriers that hold back girls and marginalized learners.
GiEM is rooted in global commitments to gender equality, particularly the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 & SDG 5). In Kenya, the movement emerged in 2023 when women leaders and CSOs convened dialogues to address stagnation in girls’ education caused by patriarchal norms, poverty, and weak policy enforcement.
- Vision: Together for a gender-equal world.
- Mission: To advance inclusive education that promotes equitable learning opportunities for all in Kenya.
GiEM’s Approach and Pillars
GiEM integrates evidence-driven strategies with grassroots action, converting research and data into practical solutions for equity in education.

Impact and Accountability
Through a shared Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) platform, which tracks progress, compiles data, and documents case studies on gender and education.
The GiEM Joint Digital Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Platform is a shared online system developed for members of the Gender in Education Movement (GiEM). It’s a collaborative digital tool that strengthens knowledge-sharing, accountability, and systemic advocacy, ensuring that GiEM’s work is not only visible but also measurable.
It is designed to:
- Serve as a central repository for data, research, program reports, and evidence on gender and education in Kenya.
- Facilitate collaboration by allowing member organizations to pool information, track progress, and avoid duplication of efforts.
- Enable evidence-based advocacy by providing access to disaggregated data (e.g., by gender, region, and vulnerability) to inform policy and program decisions.
- Track collective impact of GiEM initiatives and campaigns, showing how the movement contributes to advancing SDG 4 (inclusive education) and SDG 5 (gender equality).
Support learning and accountability by documenting best practices, success stories, and lessons learned across counties and member organizations.
GiEM mobilizes resources through grants, membership fees, and partnerships with local and international development actors.
We operate with a constitution, governance structures, and transparent reporting mechanisms shared with members and partners.
